Papaw's Sleep Away Camp
Papaw came to stay with us while Terry ad Lisa were out of town. Lisa calls it Sleep Away Camp.
First things first...he had to meet the girls. I was so excited for him to finally see them up close and personal. He wasn't really too excited about it at all..."I really don't like chickens."
Then he had to show off all his medical toys...a blower, a puffer, all kinds of meds, and oxygen. If someone knocks over an oxygen tank that are in the garage we are all going to be blown to smithereens!
Getting set up for the week.
A little bit of time in the fresh air and the good warm sunshine.
Rest time in Pappy's chair.
Dinner at Butterbees. He says the potato soup is really good as well as the grilled cheese and waffle fries. And he ate it all. It was the most I have seen him eat in a long time. Good job Michael for picking this one!
Dessert of strawberries fresh from the garden.
A little nap thrown in...but he swears that he is watching westerns.
Western watching with Emmy. We moved Michael's box springs down along with Emmy's mattress. Terry and Lisa sorry because I think he has it set in his mind that he needs a mattress just like Emmy's. One problem...we don't know what kind of mattress it is.
Bedtime snack of milk and ice cream.
And he says it is cold in here....it's 72 and above all the time...with all the vents on the first floor shut off. I think he is just trying to sneak my jacket out of here.
Homemade breakfast by me! Fresh eggs from right under The Girls and Amish jam. And he says I don't know how to cook. Best breakfast he will have all week. Well, maybe it won't compare to Bob's.
He got so tickled trying to take off my jacket that he cried.
Anderson Township Farmers Market
Lunch at The Green Kayak in New Richmond. And did you know that they don't serve coffee in the summer. That went over like a lead balloon.
Dinner just the way he likes it. The Swiss chard is from our garden. Yummmmmm
Another road trip!
Schoolhouse Restaurant for lunch. Corn fritters are the best EVER!
They have the best fried chicken. But he swears that KFC is way better.
Sharing blackberry cobbler with Emmy.
The weather is a little chilly here in Cincinnati. Quilts and coffee under the pergola.
Another western for us all to enjoy. Are they twins or what?
His favorite breakfast...powdered donuts and a banana all washed down with some hot black coffee and a V8...'for my vegetables.'
A little pen and paper trick for Alaire.
Resting up for the next big adventure.
Waiting for party time! And watching another Western.
Everybody is here (even Sam) for the 91st birthday party!
We decided to take it a little easy on him today. Just a ride around to see the sites. No getting out and walking. Down on the riverfront.
The city as we are leaving on the Big Mac Bridge.
Dinner...Mark's pick. Eat your heart out Terry! Better come and visit so we can go again.
Hope you are hungry Pap.
I'd say he was. If he could have licked the plate clean I think he might have.
Switching it up a bit tonight...Where The Red Fern Grows. All that was missing was Bryce.
Back down on the Riverfront. can you see them way down there?
Saluting in front of the Singing Bridge.
Terry and Lisa and their Vegas trip have nothing on us or the Dancing waters of The Bellagio.
Always looking for a place to eat. We called the man about town, Bryce, and he suggested The Yard House. He even came for lunch.
Oh no this could be real trouble. And can I just say that since getting his new hat we haven't seen the top of his little bald head. I think he likes it.
Dessert on the house!
He is such a goof most of the time.
Story time...after lunch Cassie wanted to go to Graeter's for ice cream...it is a Cincinnati thing. Pap and I are seated by the bathroom door waiting our turn when a little old man came over and asked if he could buy Papaw's ice cream. Papaw declined saying he already had dessert. WE all enjoyed some of the best ice cream in the world and on our way out this same little man saluted Papaw and thanked him for his service. I don't think Pap understands it when people thank him.
He has a tradition I guess you could call it, of panhandling for fun. We let him have his fun in front of The Fountain for as long as it took to take this shot. Then we headed to the parking garage. While waiting for the elevator a man and two special needs adults started talking to him and asking him where he had served. He listed off a bunch of islands and the years that he had served. One of the younger adults said that they were glad that he had not died and his name wasn't on that wall. He said me too. I don't think he quite understands that when people thank him for his service that they are showing respect. He has always been very private about the time that he served. Since getting he hap and being noticed we have heard more about his time in service than we ever have. I think it is a good thing for everyone. For him to be able to talk about it and for all of us to hear what it was like. And I am sure he is sugarcoating lots of things that he tells.
It was a perfect time for a little sipping and sitting under the pergola. I shared a little of my medicinal spirits with him. He was shocked and shortly after took a pretty good little nap.
He can read a book faster than anyone I know, even Michael. Come to find out he skips a few words along the way.
Best lunch ever, fried bologna on white bread with a little tomato, onion, and mustard.
We finally made it to dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant, Casadores. After dinner we all went home to rest up for our next big adventure.
On our way to Amish Country...Miller's were having an auction getting rid of some of the things the farm has collected over the year.
One of my favorite places to go out Rt 32.
The auction was being held out back of Bakery at the hold home place. There were more horse and buggies that English vehicles. I knew it was going to be fun!
Hess Auctions was in charge. We found seats in what was the old store way back when Miller Brothers first opened. We saw one of our favorite dealers from down the road on Tater Ridge. Saw a few things that we were going to try to bid on. But once we sat there for awhile we knew it was too rich for our blood. It was still fun to watch. I could have stayed for a week. Love being around the Amish.
We decided to head for home but first we made a stop at Keim Family Market for some lunch and a few snacks to take home. It had rained a little earlier so it was perfect weather to sit out at the picnic table.
Another bologna sandwich for the Veteran. He says mine are way better. Now that is something!
Emmy surprised us all with Camp t-shirts. Love them!
Mark and Papaw are on their way back to home sweet Huntington. I think everyone had a great time and we can't wait for another week already planned for July!
Now I guess I better make a grocery list because there won't be any more camp meals out.
