Drumpet Construction

Last night Michael and about 75 other elementary children learned how to make a 'drumpet'. Dr. Craig Woodson an expert in World Music and Drum Making held a hands-on workshop. After construction, composing individual songs and a concert we came home with so much knowledge bout music it is not even funny. The kids all sat int he floor with parents in chair around them. It was killing me to have to sit with the adults. I wanted so much to help. But Michael or Luke never looked back in our direction..not even a side glance. Dr. Woodson was in complete control from the moment he sat down in his chair until the last note was played.

Dr. Woodson walked in, sat down and started playing this homemade drum and the kids got quiet. He never said a word. Then when he added tape to the drum and played...laughter could be heard outside. The sound...an armpit flatulation.

Everything needed for construction was in a white paper bag. All of which were recycled...repurposed materials. I love it!

There are so many uses for these pieces of recycled newspapers...back scratchers at this moment in the presentation.

Michael and every other child there last night now has a copyrighted song, they composed and preformed.

This was rehearsal.

The actual concert was awesome. They not only had to play the instruments but they also had to follow Dr. Woodson as he conducted.

Michael is so proud of his drumpet that it is on his windowsill, right beside his Star Wars stuff.
