Sight Seeing Excursion
To get to just about anywhere you have to take the Glenora Ferry. Robin wasn't too sure about this at all.
We were lucky to be the first on the ferry. Before the ferry even decided to pull away from the dock, Robin was out of the van...just it case it went down she would be able to get to safety fast and first. A little windy, as all the days in Canada are.
I have always wanted to take a ride on the 1ooo Islands boats to tour the Bolt Castle. We drove two hours to Gananoque to sit for 30 minutes to take a 2 1/2 hour boat ride. We wanted so badly to walk thru and explore the castle but those tours are 5 and 8 hours long. Not the day to do that...we would have had to be at the dock at 8AM. Maybe next trip.
Michael chose our seats while Robin, Dustin and Molly went up top...later to sit inside with us because it was a little chilly. We put Michael by an open window just in case...we have discovered that he gets carsick...so we didn't want to take any chances.
One of the many lighthouse we saw on the way to the castle. Looks like Maine to me, not Canada.
Alster Tower....looks like a huge sand castle.
A little history...'At the turn of the century, George C. Bolt, millionaire proprietor of the world-famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NY City. set out to build a full-sized Rhineland
Castle in Alerandria Bay on Heart Island. This castle was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise. Beginning in 1900, Bolt's family shared four glorious summers on Wellesley Island while 300 workers, stonemasons, carpenters, and artists fashioned a six story, 120 room castle. In 1904 all work was stopped because Louise died suddenly. Bolt never returned to the island. For 73 years the castle remained vacant. Then the Thousand Island Bridge Authority assumed ownership.'
