CO...A little Yard Work

Sorry Emmy, but I have to put these yard work pics in next.

Trevor and Cassie have been really working hard on their front yard. The grass is like a thick green carpet...all it needed was a little edging in front of the metal edging they didn't know they had...a little moving of a few small plants in front which took no time at all.

We found a pretty good collection of this stonecrop and decided to divide it and pit it in some other places in the front flower bed. It looks pretty small now but in no time it will cover this entire area and will have to be split and put somewhere else.

These are little Johnny-Jump-Ups or violas. They were coming up everywhere in two or three different colors. So we dug some of them up and put them in the very front corner of the bed at the sidewalk.

I found this planter int he backyard and when I asked Cassie about it she said that it had blown into the yard during the last big storm. I was thrilled...almost as good as FreeCycle.org. So I had a packet of cosmos and we added some manure compost and placed the planter on the front porch. They promised that they would water it everyday.

After a phone call and discussion with the Master Gardener, it was decided that a trip to Lowe's was in order. We have the inside scoop that if the bag of dirt, compost or manure have been damaged in anyway...AKA...spilling out all over...you can bag it in a plastic bag and get it for half price. We were able to find almost everything we needed and then a few plants on clearance and some badly needed garden tools and my favorite farm implement...a scuffle hoe. We barley had room for the kids on the way back home. We got Ellis and Alaire settled for a nap and Michael found a movie to watch. Cassie and I headed outside to work our buns off for as long as we could. We edged until we just couldn't edge anymore! Looks nice and finished.

We dug up all the flowers around the fire pit. Then we planted then along the backside of the fence at the bottom of the backyard. I also found some cone flowers and what I think are black eyed Susan's. And there was some really pretty orange flowers too.Trevor and Cassie were looking for something to perk up the street side of the fence. So we put some more of those fire pit flowers at each end. Trevor has a plan for the middle section. When digging up the flowers around the fire pit I found a rose bush. Actually three bushes. Cassie and I decided to transplant them at the side of the house. And then we put two under glass jars...a way I learned to transplant a twig from Chicken Soup For The Gardener's Soul.

Trevor built these two raised beds awhile ago. So Cassie and I added some good dirt and planted peas, cucumbers, several types of peppers and tomatoes, some zucchini and some yellow squash. Oh, and some cilantro. When I talked to Cassie tonight she said that they cold almost pick a jalepano in the near future. We planted some sunflower seeds along the fence behind the flowerbed. Ellis was so excited. He wants to be able to eat them but I think they have to be for the birds.

Alaire had to have a plant. We didn't think to get a pink one for her. She was okay with the strawberries because she had on her strawberry dress. Please be sure to notice the tap shoes still on her feet.Oh, I almost forgot. Ellis was telling us about a flower that eats bugs. Of course Michael knew all about it and proceeded to tel us all about a Venus Flytrap. I just happened to see one on the way to check out at Lowe's. So here is a picture of Ellis feeding it some ants that Cassie found. According to Michael...if you feed the plant it won't have to eat for three days. Once it has eaten three times the flower will turn black and a new plant will begin to grow. Who knew?

Tyler and I are wanting to put flower beds in front of our house. I wanted to plant a little garden too, but never got the chance. I could use your expertise as I know NOTHING about growing things. I like to say I have a brown thumb, lol.
