An Avid Reader

I am loving the fact that Michael has discovered a series of books that he will just pick up and read without being asked to. We were reading last night and I noticed in the back of the book that there was a website...oh, my! I sent the following email to his teachers on the spot...Michael is LOVING The Magic Tree House books. I was on the Internet tonight and found they had a web site. After reading each book you can take a test and earn a stamp to put on your passport. Michael is so excited. He just came out of his bed and told me that when he reads all the books he is going to take his passport to school and show all his friends. I am loving this! Just thought you would like to know. Then this morning I got this from Michael's teacher...Thank you Jan!! Before even having a chance to read this email Michael told me that he had something in his backpack that he wanted to show me. I told him that he could share it with the class. I think others would find this exciting as well and may want to do it!! (Maybe not as excited as Michael:) He is reading the books here at school as well so he may be taking extra quizzes at home when he completes the books. Michael also said that he would share your website with the other kids today. I hope that this is alright. I just thought that the other children would think it was cool that he painted a window and also that he has his own website!! Have a great weekend!!

The first graders are all reading in the Adventure Reading Program. Each night the children are to read for 15 minutes. For every fifteen minutes they receive a sticker. They each have a goal of earning 20 stickers a month. At the end of each month they have a ceremony. There are usually several students that exceed their stickers. There is a Top Dog Award given to the student with the most stickers. Michael wants to be Top Dog so bad. Last month he had 50 stickers and came in third I think. So far this month he already has 27 stickers. The directions say that any reading that they do counts...reading the funnies, Mario games, restaurant menus...I only count the actual time he sits down with me at night and reads the books from our public library or from his school library. He has read most of the my preschool books and his own books. If he keeps up this pace he could be Top Dog.
