EMPS #25...Birds

This weeks challenge from Carly is to photograph birds. I have been trying to figure out just how to do this ...so they aren't all a blur. My first attempts (which no one will ever see) were of humming birds. I know, dumb first choice. They move so fast and if you have no idea about the capabilities of you camera, you or I had no clue what I was doing. Then there is the whole issue of trying to get close enough to get a good shot. I have found that birds don't hang around too long. You have to be ready before they are. I can not tell you how many hours I have spent i the backyard, in various places in even more entertaining positions...the neighbors must think I am crazy. But the best shot I have so far is of this poor little Robin (how fitting I would say) taken last summer from he kitchen window.I remember that we had been out in the yard working, probably on the watering can fountain, when it started to sprinkle. We had decided to get some lunch. We had just finished the fountain so I had the window open so we could look at it while we ate and hear the water. I kept hearing this little fellow scream for his momma. He was going crazy. For the longest time he just sat and screamed. I felt so sorry for him. I think that is the longest I have ever seen a bird perch. I finally had to go do something else and by the time we went back outside, he was gone. I am hoping his Mom came to the rescue and guided him back to the nest.

There are so many other gifted Robins. You can go here and check out all of their bird shots. And congrats to you Carly...nice take over. I have enjoyed posting with EMPS. Everyone has always made me feel welcome. Not to mention that when I have a problem concerning any part of the challenge, someone always emails with the answers in ways that I can understand. Sorry, there are no white birds that visit our yard, so no extra credit for me this week.

Hi Wammy :)

Oooh look... a Robin! I haven't seen a robin yet in the assignment! Well done! And a pretty little Robin he is. Makes me smile. :) I am glad you play along with us, I always look forward to your photographs, and this one is so sweet. Don't worry about the hummingbirds, you will do fine with them. I use a tripod, it's just the best way to capture them I think... fast little rascals. :)

Oh, I like your young robin a lot! Yes, birds can be a real challenge. There was a time 20+ years ago when I used to go into the mountains with a decent camera and extra lenses and even a tripod - and I STILL couldn't get a decent hummingbird photo!

Birds are a tough subject even if you've bee doing it for a while. Even the large ones can be a challenge, but the smaller quicker ones are almost impossible unless you catch them at rest or get incredibly lucky. You can never predict where they're going to go and even with a fairly long lens you have to get so close that you lose them before you can get a shot off.

Oddly enough a hovering hummingbird seems like a piece of cake by comparison... but I'd have to try it to confirm that and I don't see so many of those.

Photos of the birds that visit me probably delight me more than photos of the birds I visit - and much more intimate as this one is. I love the bucket with flowers in the background. Nice contribution!

Poor little bird -- I hope he found his mommy. Great picture, though. I'm not good at getting bird shots -- I spook them way too easily! LOL!

He is very cute. Fledgelings can make quite a noise when they think that dinner is overdue!

Nice shot. We'll just all assume that it's mother came to get him. It's better that way. :)
