Trying To Be Festive

Michael and I have pretty much seen ever inch of every wall in our house this week. Not too much going on but we did start to breakout the Christmas stuff. We got the tree up before he got too sick. Then we have just been doing really little things off and on when we feel like it. I am doing a few things different this year. Usually our tree is full to more than overflowing with all the decorations from the past 30+ years...so I decided that instead I would place 'hide' them around the house and when you least expect a memory is right there in front of you. This is Aunt Jemimah. She was on the top of our Christmas tree for more years than I can remember. I finally had to retire her because she had been repaired so many time her repairs were unrepairable. This is one of about twenty snowflakes that my Momaw made for me. When would starch them until they were like little Frisbees...but now they are just lacy. I have ones that look like little stars and all different sizes and shapes of snowflakes. I keep them in a special box and no one is allowed to put them on the tree but me. We decorated the steps but I think they might still need a lot of work. You can't see but I have some tin icicles that were made at Shakertown, Harrodsburg, KY. When the light hits them and the air makes the move they just shimmer. I love them. And they are another ornament that no one is allowed to touch. I think I see and ugly pattern here....Mark's Mom made this many, many, moons ago. There is a church and house with the name Ellis painted above the front door and Michael's favorite, the Candy Store. He was such a big help in getting this all together. I can't believe the light still works. In my younger years when I could see without bifocals or and magnifying glass with a light I crossed-stitched with the best of them. I remember making lots of these Santa's but this Jolly Old Man is the last one to be found. I am sure we will find more treasures as we go thru the tubs in the basement. I think I am going to have everyone take a picture of their favorite ornament and then I will tell you about them in a later blog.
