Pioneer Cooking

Well, well, well, today was Pioneer Cooking 101. Today, Michael and I began our adventure in cooking in the dutch oven over the campfire that my Dad got me for my birthday while we were in Amish Country last weekend. I decided to wing it and just make some potato soup from all the things that I had around the house. First we had to wash out the dutch oven to make sure that we got the coating off. I started the fire and set the tri-pod up and let some water boil in the put before we got started. Michael's job was pouring int he water. You can't imagine how fast and hot hot that thing was in less that one minute. We rushed back in the house for the potatoes, garlic, bullion cubes, carrots, salt, pepper, garlic salt and parsley. Hey, Peep, you remember those leather gloves that they suggested you have when using the dutch oven? Well, they are now at the top of my Christmas list. My oven mitts that I use in the house kinda got a hole burnt in them. Oops. What a great day to be cooking outside. Nice and cool with gentle breeze. I kept and eye on the soup while I was putting the second coat on the woodwork around the patio sliding door...had to finish it up today so there wouldn't be any fumes tomorrow when Allyson comes. So, here is the finished product, still over the fire. Looks good, smells great and didn't taste too bad. Sarah and I had some for dinner. Michael refuses to eat anything that resembles soup. Mark will have some when he gets home from work. I might be getting a little cocky but I think next I will attempt a pineapple upside-down cake. What I really need is for Jack Jeffrey to give me a few lessons around he campfire. Those Day Camp Days are way back in the very back of my memory and I am having a hard time remembering all the things he and the scouts taught us.
(Hey Cassie...do you think I can give The Pioneer Woman a run for her money?)

so sad that I missed it for real! I hope there is some left over soup for me to sample at the big old birthday party.

Why not try some "silver turtles"?
I did LOTS of campfire cooking in my Girl Scout leader days!! In fact, I even became a trainer to other leaders so they could take their girls camping also.
Word to the wise: bar b que sauce in cast iron may (did) turn chicken green. No kidding, green chicken!! It was fine to eat, just a reaction with the iron.
The cakes are really easy; use any fruit filling but pineapple is my favorite.
Have fun in your adventures.
