Shaw Farms

We could not have choosen a more perfect day to go to Shaw Farms. The temp was just between sweatshirts and light jackets. The wind was gentle and the sun wasn't too awfully bright. Barb and her two granddaughters, Emmy and Gracie, Michael and I , met at noon.First order of business for Michael was a few quick games of hopscotch. We were playing there when Barb and the girls found us. We all then headed for the maze. The kids 'walked fast' (sign for no running) through there several times while we were waiting for Emmy and Grace. Michael must think he is getting taller. We had to measure him several times...no two measurements were the same. Emmy even remarked later that she thought he was getting a little taller. Maybe there is hope for him to be taller that 5'2".Michael reads everything he can get his hands on. There were boards set up all around the back area of the farm with animal trivia. He would read me the question and I would have to answer. I am proud to say that I could answer most of the questions with the right answer. One question had Emmy a little concerned. What happens of a horse eats too much? answer...stomach ache, something I don't remember, and lastly...it might die. I think if she could have she would have erased the question all together. Grace wanted to know what die meant. Michael and all the girls did some pioneer cooking. They even sent me to pioneer cooking class. You can't imagine some of the ingredients they used. But it was all delicious!
There were jack-o-lantern people all over the place. Each section had a different theme. From pirates to The Flintstones...here are just some of my favorites. The great thing about them is that they are painted on fake Styrofoam pumpkins. That way they can be used year after year. Great idea...why didn't I think of that!

We did some wagon sitting for pictures while we were waiting for a hay ride.Let me just tell you how challenging it is to get four hooligans to sit in a wagon together and to have them all look at the camera at the same time. Who cares out what they smiles looks like. At least they are all in one place at one time. The hay ride was one of the best and longest I have even been on. Haley and Michael decided that they were big enough to ride on the other side by themselves. It turned out to be great because another little boy sat on Michael's right and all three of them yelled and hollered the entire hayride. Michael kept telling everyone about the hayrides is WV...how cool they were. That's my boy!
The last thing we did was to check out the pumpkins. They were so pretty. Some were bright orange. Some were totally green. There were some all white ones, my favorites. And then there were those giant ones...some weighing 105 pounds. They were really unbelievable.

Mom...Michael what was your favorite part of today?
Michael...

The hayride. It was spooky and smelled like feet.

Are you guys going to Pumpkin Show in Circleville this year?

Wouldn't that be fun? I was telling Barb all about Circleville when we were riding on the hay ride. That's funny.

We still go every year. Now the kids, their spouses and kids all go too. We have a ball!!! First up, sitting on the curb, eating pumpkin pancakes. Danell's little girl, Cesy, was born on Oct 20, 2006, the Saturday of the 100th Pumpkin Show. Needless to say, we didn't go that year.
