Damage All Around Us
Who would believe that Cincinnati, Ohio would feel any effects of Hurricane Ike that slammed TX. But we did.
We were supposed to be celebrating Sarah's birthday Sunday evening. The winds started and they just continued to increase in power. Bryce and Tini tried to make it from downtown...not happening. Emmy made it but not without trouble. The winds whipped the car around. She saw an umbrella comes across three lanes of traffic and knock a woman off a motorcycle. Then a man that had injuries because a tree branch went thru his car window. She finally made it and we sat on the front porch (we were well guarded from the storm by a brick garage wall.) We saw everything from grill covers to what looked like sheets of landscape fabric blow down the street at a rapid pace. We heard tree after tree snap. Sirens. I can only try to imagine if we had been in TX. (I have seen first hand how devastating hurricanes can be...Katrina in Gulf Port, MS) So birthday was put on hold.
Once again the angels were holding hands and praying around our house Not a tree limb was lost and there was no damage. Behind us a tree (right next to the one that fell in the last storm a month ago) was pulled up by the roots and took out the side of a garage. John and Renee lost some limbs. Two gazebos. Ronda and Lynn have a tree that is split in half, just hanging waiting for the next wind to demolish their fence.
I am still amazed that we had no real damage. Emmy and I sat on the front porch and listened to one of our trees crack but nothing, thank you Jesus, fell in our yard or into our yard except small twigs and lots and lots of leaves (thank you cicada leaves). I had gone in for a second and came back to see this limb resting on the upstairs window of John and Renee's house. I thought I might call them, they were at a Bengals game, trying not to get blown out of their seats. Mark and I walked over during the wind storm to access the damage a little more closely. About the time we walked to the other side of the tree a gust of wind got it and took it down...not five feet from us. It pretty much trashed the front yard. There were a few limbs on the side yard also. This once was a really nice gazebo with a canvas cover. Mark and I tried to save it by taking off the canvas. We couldn't save the frame. It looked like someone had taken a blender to it. At that point their second gazebo was safe in the back corner of the yard. We decided that we should probably head back to the safety of the porch. I was talking to the neighbor on the other side when we all saw a huge tree out back bite the dust...literally dust everywhere. I wish I had taken a picture with Michael standing by these roots. You can not imagine how big the root ball is and how cleanly it was taken off. The trunk of the tree hit the corner of the garage and did a little damage. Boots, the lady who lives there, is in Florida and is due back today. Victor's parents will have to pay for the damage since the Governor announced a state of emergency for this area or the whole state. I wouldn't know I had no electricity or battery operated radio. (I am on the look out for a solar, battery operated, crank radio. Renee's Mom has one that she let us borrow)
