Gardening With Bryce

Bryce was just a little impressed with the construction skills of his parents (and Mr. John)

So we have the dirt pile to consider. I had already decided that next summer we are going to build three or four raised vegetable beds in the back corner of the yard behind Michael swing set ( another reconstruction project in the next two weeks.) So we had to more all the grasses that we had brought from Pap's stash in WV. Bryce just loves yard work, especially when you get all itchy...he has such delicate skin...seriously.
We started with Mark using the edger to remove the weeds so we could get in to dig the grass up with out hopefully running into poison ivy...last time Bryce did lawn work with us he ended up in the ER with a really bad case of poison ivy, so we have to be really careful. I suggested that he put on a pair of long socks and some scrubs but he would have none of that...way to hot!
I love this one...Bryce (since he is majoring in urban development, or something like that) He is telling we what kind of soil we have and that dirt clods have another name...I can't remember what he said, they have always been clods of dirt to me. By the time he had moved one grass, his arms were shewed up something terrible and itched like no other.
Okay, so this is not the best shot in the world, but aren't you just a little impressed that an almost 54 year old grandmother of two, mother of many more, can actually still bend over like this? Then let me just say, that by the end of the day I can hardly pick up my feet to get in the shower. But it is all good!
This is what is shaping up to be a new bed in the yard...another one, thanks to the dirt pile. I think in a few years it will look nice. W have dug up all the grasses from the back and transplanted them, transplanted a bucket of ditch lilies to go along the back side and added lots of fertilizer and Preen (my best gardening trick...no more weeds, or maybe less weeds) Still kicking ideas around in my head as to what to do....
I think we finally figured out what to put in the bed...iris from Pap. Mark had me digging up the iris that I had planted in the bed off the little patio, I have been trying to figure out where to put them....in the bed is perfect...lots of sun and all in one place so when they come up and bloom they will be beautiful.
This is the only way I could thinktoget a good enough picture to show you what we have started. The rocks are left over from all the digging in the yard. And the clay pots are from my neighbor. Next year I am going to start some annuals from seed and put in all the pots and scatter them in the yard for that little added bit of color. We can jsut barely see two little what look like dry river beds...that is where we will be digging next weekend wehn Peep is here for the drainage tiles. Sounds like tons of fun...wonder what Bryce will be doing that weekend?
