Retired, Yet Again
Retirement...just the sound of it makes me tired. I think I should like to use the word...retreat...yes, that's perfect. Today is the last official day of preschool with children. Next Tuesday is Clean-Up and Out Day for the teachers. A retreat because I will become a Nanny in the fall to a newborn. I am both sad and excited about the change. Preschool is a great place to be. Lots of great teachers...ones that not only enrich the lives of the children they serve...but teachers that actually have an vested interest in these children and help, guide, and nurture them to be the best that they can be. I know this because I was able to teach the first nine years the preschool was open. The preschool had been in the community for more than 15 years...that is certainly lots of little individual wonders walking thru the doors.
I found this poem taped to the front of my computer...
The Lost Dr. Seuss Poem...I Love My Job...
I love my job, I love the pay!
I love it more and more each day.
I love my boss, she is the best!
I love her boss and all the rest.
I love my office and its location.
I hate to have to go on vacation.
I love my furniture, drab and grey, and piles of paper that grow each day!
I think my job is really swell, there's nothing else I love so well.
I love to work among my peers.
I love there leers, and jeers, and sneers.
I love my computer and my software.
I hug it often though it won't care.
I love each program and every file. I'd love them more if they worked a while.
I'm happy to be here. I am. I am.
I'm the happiest slave of the school, I am.
I love this work, I love the chores.
I love the meetings with deadly bores.
I love my job-I'll say it again-I even love those friendly men.
Those friendly men who've come today,
In clean white coats to take me away!!!!
I truly will miss...
Val...an old friend...I love hearing about her kids that were once my preschool kids
Debbie...my evil 'twin sister'
Margaret...the expressive energetic way she spoke to the children
Elyse...the 'mature' member of the staff
Eloise...one of my preschool graduates Mom who just couldn't stay away
Jean... her unhurried morning greeting
Sharon...reunion of a teaching team back when it all started
Cathy...my 'How many Mondays left counting buddy'
Kathy...her cool thinking out of the box ideas
Pat L...her always kind words in that English accent
Pat B...her reminders of things we needed along wit her Irish accent...another preschool parent grad that couldn't stay away
Toni...her sweet quiet spirit
Kay...we were newbies together this year
Portia...her cheerful always smiling self
Susan...that catchy song that the children sing going up and down the steps
Barb...her patience with someone that didn't even come close to having the slightest idea what she was doing
The MWPC staff...always there when I couldn't get something in the print room to work...always there to show me and teach me about things on the computer...always there! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I am truly going to miss rushing to work after the bus stop drop off. Then racing down I275 with my eyes peeled for the State Trooper who always lets me by with a little bit of a lead foot. The card checker at he door of Sam's... My apple juice man at Kroger...The chicken feed guy...the 'resting' firefighters...the phone calls asking questions I had no idea how to answer....I will miss all of that and more. But then on the other hand I am so looking forward to being able to walk to the bus stop every morning with Michael and the boys...staying in my pj's if I feel the need...smelling that little baby smell...watching Allyson explore the world around a little baby head...being able to tell her parents how awesome she is...being able to hold up in the basement and quilt while she sleeps in the room with me...taking walks around the neighborhood...sit on the porch with a cup of coffee and a good book...just taking things at a little slower pace...being home all day with Mark on his days off...having the same days off as Sarah and Michael..being here every waking minute when Trevor, Cassie, Ellis and Alaire visit....being able to have lunch with Bryce downtown...going to the park with Emmy and her girls...just plain taking life a little easier and being able to take a big sniff of the roses as they pass. Life is a little crazy and things have happened to close friends and family this past few years that make you just think about what lies ahead. I just don't wast to miss a minute of 'all my kids' doing all the things that they do.
