Back In Business

I feel like I have been in withdrawal...a few days without a camera can drive a person crazy....but bryce (my capital b isn't working now) has kept me busy...more about that later. We have been on the edge of a drought. I have been praying for rain, sprinkles, any type of moisture to fall from the sky. The plants just look so thirsty. After watering one evening I was walking back to the front of the house and noticed this drop of water that had settled in one the elephant ears. The first thing that came to my mind was that I had been transported to A Bug's Life movie set. Here are some really perky black-eyed Susan's. They are starting to pop up all over the yard. Just what I like...surprises in the yard...so unexpected..and very much appreciated. Mark had gotten a package of cutting garden flowers. We didn't have a place to plant then in one bed so I planted them all over the yard. These are the only zennias that came up. I love the color...ma-gen-ta (just for you Leigh Ann)it is so bright. I think that there is a yellow one getting ready to bloom.Hey, Cassie, you will never guess the name of this hosta...are you ready...Dixie Chicks. This made me smile...remember at Asbury when you got in trouble from the RA for having the Dixie Chicks up as loud as it would go, dancing on your bed to "Sin Wagon"... We are hoping to attract some hummingbirds. We planted these purple bee balm and have been watching them for about two weeks, praying that they would survive in the heat...they are looking really nice. now (looks like the n isn't working either) to sit, watch and wait for the hummingbirds. I've never grown roses before but we decided to fill our old bed frame with a "bed of roses". Here is a bud from the Casa Blanca. I think tomorrow it will be in full blooms because we are getting a good storm right now. not to be out done by a bud, this JFK is in full bloom. There must be 6 more buds that will be gorgeous when they bloom...and you know that I will have a picture on here when that time comes. I remember these from first year when we moved in. I was so excited to see some color in the backyard...other than all those green weeds and yucky bushes. This year I have noticed that these are not your everyday run of the mill ditch lilies...no, they are some special kind...they are a double petalled bloom...full not airy like my usual ditch lily. A couple of weeks ago, on the way home from the Wedding/Cass Trip, we stopped at some of our all time favorite places in all the world...Tater Ridge...Keim Family Market...Miller's...and a new garden shop. Emmy and I were looking at all the plants and came upon this little beauty. It is very special to Emmy because it's name is the nickname that her Dad calls her...June bug. Can you believe it...we had to get it. I have been fertilizing and watering it a little bit extra everyday and today it paid off...one bloom. Isn't she lovely, isn't she marvelous...This pale yellow lily is so pretty first thing in the morning when the sun is just getting to that part of the yard. I know I probably have a million more planted all across the back flower bed. In ten years when everything grown together...people are going to want to pay to see our backyard...if all goes well, things should fill in and there will be minimal weeds to pull...that I can hardly wait for. not to be out done...the vegetables are starting to perk up also. Our pole beans are up and running...so much that we are going to add four more hills...maybe we might have enough to can this year...I think I'll have Cassie, Emmy and bryce over for dinner...I know that green beans are their favorites! Don't be worried about the onions in the back of this picture...we have been told that when they fall down and the tops turns brown that the onions are then ready to harvest. Looks like we are half way there. And check out Michael's "carrot sticks"...looks like a bumper crop to me! We are hoping that someday soon we might be adding these cherry tomatoes to our salads. Our four other regular tomato plants are doing just as well. We have added 4 inches of newspaper to the bottom of each plant in hopes of knocking out end-blossom rot. Our yellow squash are going crazy but the zuchinni seem to have been eaten or something. There are blooms, snipped off blooms, and big green leaves...I wonder if the deer have finally found our garden...I sure hope not because I feel sure that the hosta will be the next to go...but I am ready for them with my gallon of eggs, garlic powder and water.
