EMPS #34...Earth Day
First thing this morning Michael informed me that tonight at 8PM we will be turning everything we can off, for one hour. Looks like we are training a 'new tree hugger' just for you Julie and Sarah Beth. I have been think about all the ways that we are trying to do to keep things green...
We have been researching rain barrels. I found a really nice terra cotta one. Marks thinks the ones at Lowe's are pretty nice. We need to save all our pennies... so until then we will have rain buckets. They work great! I use the water collected in them to water the plants inside the cold frame that we built from a recycled window.
Our Square Foot Garden is growing like crazy...everything from beets to turnips. The peas are just about ready to climb the trellis. We even have flower and vegetable seeds started and in the family room by the sliding glass doors. We need to wait until Mother's Day weekend to put them out. I try to do things like...use cloth bags when going shopping, recycling aluminum, glass, paper and plastic, consolidating the trips in the car, turning off the heat (adding another layer of clothes), opening the windows for cooling, unplugging everything but the fridge, line drying laundry, cloth napkins, the light bulb thing, reusing things that others throw out as craft materials (I love checking out the garbage on the sides of the road...we've found some pretty fun stuff being garbage pickers. Michael and I will be setting up a work farm (DIY NZ article) for our two compost piles.
Carly, I am excited to see what the other Robins have to offer for this challenge. Tomorrow we are going to the movies to see the Earth movie. We are so excited because they will be planting a tree for each ticket purchased. Pretty cool wouldn't you say. With everyone that plans to go...they will be planting a small grove of trees.
Check out God's Abundant Gifts for a really nice shot of one of my favorite green plants that we have in the yard.
