Handy Helpers
Help comes in many different ways around Wammeyville. This is my 'oldest' friend, Carolyn. To say she is handy is an understatement! She can do just about everything. This bench had been bugging her for so long. She kept telling me that she was going to sand it and refinish it. And today was the day that she started. She carried a box with all the items that she would need to complete the project.
The HandyWoman!
Sometimes you have to remind her to focus. Jase was her apprentice. I love that she let him help.
Under her watchful eye, he followed her every direction and got the top of my log smooth so I could put chalkboard paint on it. It will go out in the backyard, and the yahoos can draw on it or play tic-tac-toe.
Back to the old school desk.
Adi even got a chance to help. She used a tack cloth to wipe it down. As you can see from her face, she was not a fan. But she worked until the job was completed.
It is hard to know what we were discussing. But it looked pretty intense.
She gave Ava a lesson about the door panels.
The Legend
The Cross: The intersecting horizontal and vertical wood pieces (the rails and stiles) at the top of a six-panel door frame the four upper panels to look like a cross.
The Open Bible: The two larger panels at the bottom of the door are said to represent an open Bible.
The Purpose: According to folklore, 18th century colonial builders or homeowners crafted these doors to subtly display their Christian faith or to protect the home from evil spirits and witches.
I don't know about all of that; I just like the doors.
One last inspection. Result: WE LOVE IT!
And if those two projects weren't enough. We cleaned the deacon's bench my dad made and the basket that, you guessed it, came from Carolyn...all cleaned and stained. Best-looking porch on the street.
Thanks to all my helpers!
